Red Bull has officially announced the signing of Robin Raikkonen, son of 2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, to their junior driver programme. The announcement was made on Wednesday, marking the beginning of Robin's professional racing career.
The Raikkonen family was seen attending the Italian Grand Prix at Monza last weekend and were spotted in the Red Bull motorhome, sparking speculation that has now been confirmed.
Robin, who is 11 years old, currently competes in professional karting. He has already achieved notable success in national and international Rotax and WSK championships, showcasing his talent on track.
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies expressed confidence in Robin's potential. "Robin has already demonstrated exceptional ability in karting. His speed, racecraft, and natural talent have established him as one of the most promising young drivers in his age group. He also impresses with his maturity and calm approach," Mekies said.
Red Bull emphasized a step-by-step development plan without unnecessary pressure. "Our goal is to develop him gradually, without placing unnecessary pressure on his shoulders. The path through motorsport is long, and we will give him the time, support, and resources he needs to maximize his potential," Mekies added.
Kimi Raikkonen, who retired from F1 at the end of 2021, welcomed the decision. "We are all thrilled and excited that Robin has been chosen to further his racing path as a member of the Red Bull Junior Team. They offer a compelling programme to develop his natural talent, which has been clearly displayed in all his karting endeavours," he said.
The Red Bull Junior Team has a proven track record of nurturing talents such as Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Robin's inclusion marks a promising start, given his racing pedigree.
