Red Bull has provided an update on the wrist injury sustained by Isack Hadjar, which has forced the Frenchman to miss a third consecutive Formula 1 race weekend in Madrid. The injury occurred during boxing training as the summer break drew to a close.
Team principal Laurent Mekies explained that the decision to withdraw Hadjar from the Madrid round was straightforward, as the driver did not feel he was at 100 percent. "It was an easy one," Mekies told Sky Sports. "He didn't feel that he was 100%, and that's the only criteria we use: Are you 100%? So it wasn't an easy one for here. We always said we will prioritise him coming back at 100%. There is no point in throwing him into a track like this, not feeling good and potentially delaying his full recovery."
Mekies added that Hadjar's recovery is progressing as planned. "We have a bit more time before Baku, and honestly, there is nothing wrong with his recovery. His recovery is going as planned. Some of these things take time, and we will take the time to evaluate him before Baku and to put him on the sim," he said.
In the meantime, Liam Lawson, who stepped up from Racing Bulls to fill the vacant seat, has impressed. Mekies praised the New Zealander's performance. "Liam has been doing a good job. In Zandvoort, he got all the points he could with a P7 finish. In Monza, the race pace we evaluated as being actually quite good. He had a P6, P7, certainly P7 race pace, but he had a front-wing contact, which meant an additional pit stop. So, that's what it is. So far, I think he's doing a good job. It's never easy to change cars, and let's see this weekend."
Hadjar's injury was sustained while boxing, and he has been absent from the cockpit since the Dutch Grand Prix. He also missed Monza and will now sit out Madrid. Red Bull has opted not to rush his return, prioritising a full recovery over risking further damage.
Lawson's previous stint with Red Bull in 2025 lasted only two races before he was demoted to Racing Bulls and replaced by Yuki Tsunoda. However, this time around, his performances have been far stronger, with pace comparable to that shown by Hadjar in the first half of the season.
Red Bull hopes to have Hadjar back for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. The team will evaluate his condition before the race and plans to run him in the simulator as part of his preparation. If all goes well, Hadjar is expected to return to the cockpit for the remainder of the 2026 season.
