Max Verstappen has never been one to hide his frustration. For years, he has complained about degradation issues at the rear of his car. Now, Red Bull is finally starting to see the light. After a series of intense races, the Milton Keynes-based team admits they have identified the area that has been causing the problem.
Pierre Wache, Red Bull's technical director, acknowledges that this is a 'massive issue' that cannot be solved overnight. However, he is optimistic that the lessons learned this season will be invaluable for the 2027 car's development. "You are never confident, but we keep working," he said with a smile.
The Dutchman himself feels that progress is being made. "Yeah, it’s work in progress. We see some things now, like Laurent said. Maybe some of those things cannot be changed for this year, but maybe there’s some good lessons for next year. So I feel like we are finally pinpointing areas where we can be better," said Max Verstappen.
This degradation issue is not just a minor annoyance. It affects the car's overall performance, especially at the rear which often loses grip as the session progresses. Verstappen has long highlighted that certain components wear out faster than they should, costing him valuable time on track.
Red Bull has introduced its final upgrade package for the RB22 in Baku, including a new floor and revised sidepods. After practice sessions, Wache concluded that the correlation is good and the package is working as expected. However, the focus is already shifting towards the 2027 car, as the team realizes that chances of winning races this season are slim.
Nevertheless, the lessons from this season remain important. With regulations largely stable, Red Bull can apply what they have learned to next year's car. Verstappen has indicated that some larger changes are not possible with the RB22 but can be implemented for next season.
Behind the scenes, the technical team continues to analyze data and driver feedback. They hope to fully resolve the degradation issue by 2027. Of course, there are no guarantees, but the small steps taken now could lay a strong foundation for the future.
For the fans, this is a sign that Red Bull is not standing still. They acknowledge their weaknesses and are working to fix them. If everything goes to plan, we might see a stronger and more consistent Red Bull in the seasons to come.
