Laurent Mekies has confirmed that Red Bull Racing's long-awaited state-of-the-art wind tunnel facility will most likely only come online during the second half of the 2027 Formula 1 season, shifting from its original 2026 target.
The brand-new facility based in Milton Keynes is set to replace the team's current testing site in Bedford. While the legacy tunnel was famously described by former team figures as a cold war relic, it famously powered Max Verstappen to consecutive drivers' championship titles.
Speaking to media outlets, the team principal explained that the exact launch date depends on construction timelines and subsequent calibration work. 'So most likely for the second part of the 2027 car, and hopefully for most of the '28 car,' he stated regarding the development impact.
Acknowledging that the outfit currently operates what is widely considered the oldest wind tunnel on the grid, management remains confident that the modern upgrade will eventually unlock fresh aerodynamic potential for the technical department.
'If you jump to a state-of-the-art facility... of course you expect a competitive advantage from there. So it's not going to come up as soon as we switch on everything, but it's certainly going to unlock potential,' he concluded, with insights originally reported by Motorsport.com.
