Red Bull Addressing F1 ADUO System Ahead of 2027 Changes

Formula 1's latest technical regulations continue to spark intense discussions behind the scenes, particularly regarding power unit metrics that have placed Red Bull under the spotlight. The Milton Keynes-based squad is currently working closely with the FIA to fine-tune the Additional Development and Upgrades Opportunities system following contentious findings regarding its power unit benchmark status.

Introduced for the new rule cycle, ADUO measures the V6 engine performance of all power manufacturers at the end of each quarter, allocating development tokens to those lagging behind. Initial expectations pointed toward Mercedes setting the benchmark due to their strong start, yet the system surprisingly designated Red Bull as the yardstick.

This discrepancy occurs because the system exclusively evaluates the internal combustion engine, ignoring other vital performance differentiators where Mercedes excels across the board. With FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis acknowledging existing weaknesses in the methodology, discussions are actively underway to adjust the framework for 2027.

"We were surprised and a bit more than that at the initial evaluations from the FIA," said Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies, as reported by Motorsport.com. "We made our case. We showed them why we felt it was not capturing the right picture. We are having discussions with them on what can be improved in the methodologies for next year with them."

Despite the ongoing debates and the team's debut season as a power unit manufacturer alongside partner Ford, Max Verstappen and his squad remain fully focused on extracting maximum performance from their overall package. "Ultimately, we prefer to be in a position to have a strong engine and no ADUO rather than a weak engine and claiming the ADUO," Mekies concluded, emphasizing that background development in operating windows and vehicle dynamics continues relentlessly.
