Rally Japan SS5 Results: Toyota Dominance, Neuville Frustrated

Toyota driver Elfyn Evans continued his absolute control over Rally Japan by setting the fastest time in Special Stage 5 (SS5). Evans beat teammate Oliver Solberg by 1.1 seconds, extending his overall lead in the rally to 16.2 seconds.

Technically, Toyota's pace was on a completely different level compared to Hyundai, which appears unable to find the correct asphalt setup for its vehicles. The performance gap was enormous, with Thierry Neuville trailing Evans by a massive 22.4 seconds. This disparity indicates a fundamental failure in Hyundai's ability to match the traction and stability that Toyota has mastered on the Japanese tarmac.

The technical struggle was highlighted by Neuville, who reported a complete loss of balance as soon as the team fitted hard tire compounds. Neuville stated that he was forced to slow down at every corner just to make the car turn, pointing to a chronic understeer issue. He claimed the car was simply not designed to be fast in these specific conditions, leaving him unable to push to the absolute limit.

Sébastien Ogier remained competitive, finishing 2.8 seconds behind Evans and holding third place overall, 19.6 seconds adrift of the leader. Meanwhile, Sami Pajari expressed surprise at the amount of time he lost despite having a good feeling about his rhythm, eventually slipping to fourth place, 44.4 seconds behind Evans.

Takamoto Katsuta and Adrien Fourmaux both finished more than a minute behind the stage winner. Toyota's dominance in SS5 confirms that their technical approach to grip management and chassis setup is perfectly aligned with the requirements of this event. Conversely, Hyundai's struggle with the hard tire balance has left them completely out of contention for the stage victory.

With one more special stage remaining on Friday's itinerary, Evans is firmly in control. The primary technical challenge now lies with Hyundai, who must find a solution to their understeer problems before the rally continues into Saturday and Sunday, while Toyota focuses on maintaining their flawless pace.
