Rally Japan SS4 Results: Solberg Fastest, Evans Lead Shrinks

Toyota rider Oliver Solberg delivered a formidable performance in Special Stage (SS4) Asuke 2 of Rally Japan. Solberg set the pace, beating Elfyn Evans by 2.6 seconds. This result allows Solberg to significantly reduce Evans' overall lead in the rally.

Technically, the road position advantage that previously benefited Evans shifted during this stage. Evans, running first on the road, only managed the third-fastest time. The evolving track conditions meant that the surface became more favorable for subsequent drivers, neutralizing the benefit of starting first and allowing Solberg to maximize his acceleration.

Sebastien Ogier secured the second-fastest time, expressing satisfaction with the increased grip levels. Ogier noted that the conditions had become more equal for the remaining stages compared to the morning runs. The improved traction enabled Ogier to maintain a higher cornering speed and a more aggressive attacking line.

Frustration mounted for Sami Pajari, who finished 4.1 seconds behind Solberg. Despite the improved track conditions, Pajari was surprised by the significant time loss. This suggests a struggle in finding the correct attack rhythm, as the balance between speed and grip proved difficult to calibrate in the evolving conditions of SS4.

A critical technical issue affected Thierry Neuville of Hyundai. Neuville trailed Solberg by 7.1 seconds, attributing the loss to a significant performance difference between the soft and hard tire compounds. This mismatch in tire choice led to excessive sliding across the stage, severely undermining his confidence and overall pace.

Meanwhile, Takamoto Katsuta continued to struggle, finishing 7.5 seconds off the pace. Still recovering from an earlier puncture, Katsuta admitted he could not fully push the car due to the risk of further mechanical damage. In contrast, Adrien Fourmaux showed strong pace, closing the gap to Katsuta down to 8.9 seconds.

With two Special Stages remaining on Friday, the competition in Rally Japan has intensified. The primary technical focus for the teams will be optimizing tire compound selection and adapting to the increasing grip of the asphalt. This strategic management will be decisive in determining the overall standings before the event concludes on Sunday.
