Rally Estonia Moves Closer to Long-Term WRC Future

Rally Estonia is edging closer to securing a long-term future in the World Rally Championship after receiving official backing from the Estonian government. A cooperation agreement signed with the Ministry of Culture signals that the event will likely remain on the WRC calendar for years to come.

Since hosting its first WRC round in 2020, Rally Estonia quickly became a fan favorite with its fast and challenging gravel roads. However, after the 2023 season, it lost its slot to Rally Latvia in 2024. Now back on the calendar for 2025 and 2026, its future was again uncertain until this latest development.

Rally Estonia CEO Janno Siitan emphasized the government's full commitment. “The government continues to support the event, and we are currently waiting for this year's economic impact study. We saw that the rally attracted more international visitors than ever before, particularly from Latvia and Finland. In the long term, it is vital that foreign revenue continues to flow into Estonia,” he said.

The Estonian government has provided millions in annual funding for the rally. The memorandum of cooperation ensures that public funding for hosting rights and organization will remain available, providing a solid foundation for negotiations with the WRC promoter.

The 2027 WRC calendar is expected to be finalized in September. Estonia is understood to have a strong chance of securing its place, especially now that the government has formally backed the project. However, the final decision rests with the promoter and FIA.

Another factor that could boost Rally Estonia's appeal is the potential return of Ott Tanak to competitive action next year. The Estonian star has been absent from the WRC this season, working instead as a Toyota test driver. His comeback would be a major draw for local and international fans alike.

With government support, a strong fan base, and the potential Tanak comeback, Rally Estonia appears to have the right ingredients to secure its long-term place on the WRC calendar.
