Weather has once again become the main culprit at Milwaukee Mile. IndyCar's Race 1, originally scheduled for Saturday night local time, was postponed for the second time due to heavy rain. Organizers tried to restart the race on Sunday afternoon, but rain returned, forcing a complete schedule overhaul. Now, Race 1 will take place at midnight, oddly after Race 2, which remains on track for 19:15 local time.
This decision certainly tests the patience of fans and teams. However, one thing makes the wait worthwhile: Alex Palou will start Race 2 from pole position and has a great chance to mathematically secure the championship, defeating closest rival Kyle Kirkwood.
For the Spanish driver, if he manages to win or finish ahead of Kirkwood, he would clinch his fifth career title, and his fourth consecutive one. A near-perfect achievement amid a dramatic season.
With this unusual double-header format, team strategy will be crucial. Race 2, which runs first, could alter track conditions and provide important insights for Race 1 under the lights. It also highlights how vulnerable oval racing is to extreme weather changes.
All eyes are now on how Palou handles the pressure in Race 2. If he performs consistently, Race 1 becomes a mere formality to celebrate the championship. But if Kirkwood can fight back, surprises may still be in store.
