Maximo Quiles produced a stunning final-corner pass to snatch victory from David Almansa in a tense Moto3 race at Misano. The Aspar rider, who leads the championship, patiently stalked Almansa throughout the race before making his move at the last possible moment.
Almansa started from pole and held the lead early on, with Brian Uriarte in close pursuit. Valentin Perrone ran third. Further back, Alvaro Carpe, who had a 12-place grid penalty, crashed while trying to carve through the field from 21st. Quiles, starting fourth, quickly made progress, passing Joel Kelso.
Quiles then took Perrone at Turn 1 on lap 4 and set off after Uriarte. After passing the rookie, he closed on Almansa but a bobble cost him time, dropping him back behind Uriarte. It took three laps to re-pass Uriarte, and once back in second, Quiles glued himself to Almansa's tail.
With five laps to go, the leading pair broke away from Uriarte. Quiles continued to shadow Almansa but didn't attempt a move until the final lap. Almansa defended, but Quiles used a wide line out of the last corner to draw level and edge ahead in the drag to the line, winning by 0.021s.
The victory extends Quiles' championship lead over Almansa to 102 points, with Almansa moving up to second in the standings. Uriarte completed the podium in third, over 12 seconds clear of the next group. Matteo Bertelle won that battle for fourth, ahead of Perrone, Rico Salmela, and Joel Kelso.
Adrian Cruces charged from the back to eighth, with Marco Morelli ninth. Casey O'Gorman rounded out the top 10, while David Gonzalez and Hakim Danish, both penalised to the back, finished 11th and 12th respectively.
