Marc Priestley, a former McLaren mechanic turned Formula 1 pundit, has strongly criticised the collision involving driver Franco Colapinto at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. However, he dismissed Lando Norris's call for Colapinto to receive a race ban.
The incident occurred during a safety car restart at the Baku City Circuit. Colapinto, driving for Alpine, attempted a move down the inside at Turn 1 but locked up and collided with his teammate Pierre Gasly. Gasly then crashed into Norris. The clash eliminated both Alpines and Norris, costing the French team a likely double-points finish.
Norris initially said Colapinto should face a race ban for the move, but he has since apologised for his comments. Priestley, speaking on the BBC's Chequered Flag Podcast, criticised Colapinto's move but also called out Norris for his remarks.
"Colapinto's move was outrageous. He came from so far back. He didn't just get it a little bit wrong, which you can sort of accept. He got it miles wrong," Priestley explained. "But that's on him. He's a young driver, and I saw him afterwards going around the entire team apologising with his tail between his legs."
Priestley added that a race ban is typically given if such incidents happen repeatedly or if driving standards consistently fall below par. "One incident like this, bad though it was, I think the penalty that he has come away with, which turned into a five-place grid penalty for next week, probably suffices," he added.
Colapinto was given a 10-second penalty for the incident, which has been converted to a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix. The decision was made after considering the impact of the incident on the race result and driver safety.
The incident has been a talking point in recent days, especially after Norris and Flavio Briatore exchanged apologies. It has also sparked discussions about driving standards in Formula 1, particularly for young drivers making their way up the ranks.
