Pramac Yamaha will introduce a package of technical updates at the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend. Team director Gino Borsoi confirmed that "some further upgrades" are on the way, though he did not specify their nature. The move signals Yamaha's continued push to close the engine performance deficit of their V4 machine.
The Red Bull Ring is hardly friendly territory for Yamaha. The circuit's hard acceleration and long straights threaten to expose the bike's weaknesses. However, Toprak Razgatlioglu has shown encouraging mid-race pace in recent rounds. At Misano last Sunday, he finished 12th after a challenging start to the season.
His teammate, Jack Miller, also has extra motivation. The Australian crashed out of the Misano race due to a small mistake, ending his points-scoring streak. Now he returns to a circuit he knows well, where he stood on the podium in 2022 with Ducati.
Borsoi emphasised that overall setup improvements in recent races have boosted the team's confidence. "We know it will be a difficult race because the characteristics of the circuit could put us under pressure, particularly when it comes to engine performance," he said. "At the same time, I believe that in the last few races we have moved a little closer to the others with our overall setup, and Austria will give us a good opportunity to understand whether that progress can be confirmed on a very different track."
For Razgatlioglu, the Red Bull Ring holds a special story. The reigning WorldSBK champion last raced there in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, long before the Turn 2 chicane was added. "It will be a new experience for me, especially because I raced here many years ago, so I need to adapt quickly and understand the track again with this bike," he explained. He also stressed the importance of qualifying, as starting further forward will be crucial on a track where overtaking is tough.
Miller is eager to return to Austria. "Looking forward to getting back to Austria. Obviously, after a difficult weekend in Misano, we worked really hard with the team to try to find a good setting. Unfortunately, a small mistake in the race ended our weekend early, so I'm looking forward to bouncing back in Austria," he said. He hopes to get comfortable with the bike and the track straight away and see what they can achieve.
Currently, Quartararo remains Yamaha's leading rider in the standings (15th), while Miller, Alex Rins, and Razgatlioglu are separated by ten points in 19th, 20th, and 21st respectively. With upgrades on the horizon, Pramac Yamaha hopes to close the gap and show real progress in the second half of the season.
