A bizarre start procedure incident left leading Porsche drivers completely bewildered during the second race at the iconic Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst. Tension immediately filled the grid as the final few cars rolled into their slots at the back, triggering flashing amber lights on the start gantry which typically signifies an aborted or delayed race start by race control.

Shortly after the amber lights began flashing, they stopped and the red start lights illuminated before extinguishing almost instantaneously. This confusing sequence caught several drivers further down the order off guard, prompting them to launch off the grid while front-row occupants remained stationary in anticipation of proper marshaling instructions.

Pole-sitter Bloxsom alongside second-place starter Russell stayed put on their marks, only to watch multiple cars stream past them on the frantic run toward the opening corner. Chaos ensued further back in the pack as eighth-place starter Tom Bewley made heavy contact with Aaron Love while attempting to thread a narrow gap, resulting in substantial damage to both racing machines and triggering another multi-car collision further down.

Russell admitted his initial inkling that something was fundamentally wrong came from seeing the double yellow flashing lights on the gantry. "The anomaly to start with was the double yellow lights, which usually signifies that there’s a delayed start," Russell told Speedcafe, explaining that he quickly radioed his team to check if race control had issued any official notification.

"When I saw the lights go out and I saw cars move, I moved because there was no way I was going to get run into and just sit there stationary," Russell added, justifying his instinctive reaction to avoid a rear-end pileup. Although he managed to escape without car damage, the ensuing lengthy red flag period left three cars completely unable to take part in the eventual restart.

Bloxsom, who found himself pushed back to third position by the time the red flags flew, noted that while dropping positions was far from ideal, he was simply relieved to salvage valuable championship points. The startling mix-up at Bathurst mirrored a remarkably similar starting light malfunction experienced at The Bend the previous year, highlighting a recurring technical headache for the Carrera Cup grid.
