The GT4 Australia field wasted no time setting the tone in Sydney, with Porsche and Audi emerging at the front in Friday practice. The opening session was topped by Silver-Am duo Caleb Paterson/Kent Quinn, who piloted the #28 Porsche Cayman to a 1m34.3044s lap. A strong blend of youth and experience immediately made their mark.
Just under half a second back in second place was the all-rookie pairing of William Exton/Jack Johnson in the #114 McLaren Artura for Team Soutar Motorsport, leading a Silver Cup trio. The lead Miedecke Motorsport Ford Mustang of Blake Tracey/George Miedecke was third fastest, ahead of the #48 Audi R8 of Purdie and Supercars rookie Stewart. Silver-Am championship leader Ryder Quin completed the top five alongside Steve Jakic in the #3 Thunder Buddies Racing BMW M4.
Returning race winner Tim Leahey needed no time to get back up to speed in the #22 Ash Seward Motorsport BMW, going straight to the top in the early running. He and new co-driver Dylan O’Keeffe were sixth fastest overall and third in the Silver-Am ranks. Meanwhile, Ryan Sorensen was the fastest Am Cup competitor in the #11 Method Motorsport McLaren Artura, setting a 1m36.8599s in 19th outright.
The afternoon session belonged to Purdie and Stewart, with the Supercars racer setting a 1m33.3755s lap early on just his third flying lap. Following the lead Silver Cup entry, Silver-Am duos covered the remainder of the top five, led by the #75 McLaren of Zac Soutar/Glenn Nirwan. In their first event back since Round 2 at The Bend, Nick McBride/Dean Koutsoumidis ended the day third fastest in the #71 Toyota GR Supra. In his series debut, Aussie Racing Cars front-runner Anthony Di Mauro was fourth fastest in the #1 Ford Mustang shared with Aaron Seton. Also returning for the first time since The Bend, the #32 Randall Racing BMW M4 of Lachlan Mineeff/Jacob Lawrence rounded out the top five.
Mustangs made up four of the remaining spots in the top 10, with Tracey/Miedecke in sixth, Aaron Cameron/Lochie Dalton’s #27 in seventh, the second Miedecke Motorsport entry of Cooper Cutts/Blake Dowdall eighth, and the #36 of Jake Camilleri in ninth. Having gone second fastest in the opening session, Exton/Johnson rounded out the top 10 in Practice 2. The #28 Porsche of Paterson and Quinn ended the day in 24th outright after topping the first session, appearing to turn focus to race pace and logging laps for Quinn.
The #64 Method Motorsport entry of Nathan Callaghan/Chris Lillis was the fastest Am Cup entry, sitting in 13th outright. The results highlight the fierce competition across all classes ahead of qualifying and racing.
Monochrome GT4 Australia returns on Saturday afternoon for qualifying at 1:05pm AEST before racing into the twilight. All GT4 qualifying and racing will be aired live on Fox Sports and Kayo. Fans can expect even more intense action on the Sydney track.
