Pol Espargaro will once again fill in for the injured Maverick Vinales at Tech3 for the MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix. The team announced on Tuesday that the KTM test rider will race at the Red Bull Ring, the Austrian manufacturer's home circuit.
This marks Espargaro's fourth consecutive appearance with Tech3 this season, having previously competed at Silverstone, Aragon, and Misano. His dual role as KTM's test and development rider keeps him sharp despite not racing full-time. "As KTM's official test and reserve rider, Espargaro will once again join the MotoGP grid with the aim of defending the brand's colours in front of the Austrian public," the team stated.
Espargaro's Dual Role
Beyond racing, Espargaro is working alongside Dani Pedrosa on the development of KTM's 850cc bike for 2027. He is also scheduled to test at Mugello on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to Spielberg. This combination highlights his importance to KTM both on and off the track.
Vinales has not fully recovered from the injury that has kept him out since the German GP on 12 July. The Spaniard has completed only eight grands prix this year and scored points in just four of them. The team hopes Vinales can return for the Japanese round, as they mentioned before Misano and again ahead of Austria.
Team Manager's Quote
Tech3 team manager Nicolas Goyon expressed pride in fielding Espargaro at KTM's home race. "It means a lot to have Pol for our factory's home race in Austria," he said. "Every time he gets on the bike, he looks more comfortable and competitive, and Misano was another positive step forward. We know we can count on his experience and professionalism, and we are looking forward to seeing him race in front of the 'orange tide' this weekend."
Espargaro has scored points in two of the three races he has contested. While the priority remains Vinales's recovery, Espargaro's presence provides stability for Tech3 amid uncertainty. "At the same time, our priority remains supporting Maverick's recovery and we hope to have him back with us as soon as possible," Goyon added.
With KTM fighting in the constructors' standings, Espargaro's performance in Austria could provide a morale boost. The home crowd will be eager to see the rider affectionately known as Polyccio in action, especially at a circuit as demanding as the Red Bull Ring.
