Pierre Gasly has explained that a sudden loss of rear control caused his heavy crash during second practice for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
The Alpine driver lost the rear of the car through the second part of the Fagnes chicane. The car then travelled into the gravel before its rear struck the barrier heavily.
Gasly attempted to regain control, but the car took too long to recover. By the time it stabilised, he was already outside the circuit and no longer had enough space to avoid the impact.

“I just had a big snap and lost the car. It took a lot longer to recover, and by the time it did, I was already off the track and could not get back on,” Gasly said.
The crash caused substantial damage, including the rear wing and right-rear wheel being torn from the chassis. The incident also triggered a red flag late in FP2 and interrupted the remaining track programmes.
Alpine managing director Steve Nielsen believed Gasly’s initial mistake was relatively small. However, Spa’s layout immediately punished the error after the car touched the kerb and was sent into the barrier.
Gasly finished FP2 in 18th place, 11 positions behind team-mate Franco Colapinto. Despite the result, he considered Alpine’s Friday testing programme productive because the two cars explored several different set-up directions.
Alpine must now repair Gasly’s car and identify the strongest combination of settings for the next session. The French driver’s target remains a place inside the top 10 once the team combines its FP1 and FP2 findings.
