Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri of McLaren has addressed the possibility of Max Verstappen leaving Formula 1 amid his dissatisfaction with the 2026 regulations.

Verstappen has repeatedly criticised the new-generation cars across the opening rounds, highlighting concerns over energy management complexity and the reduced ability to execute overtaking manoeuvres during races. The current regulatory framework has introduced a significantly different technical philosophy, requiring teams and drivers to adapt to more intricate operational demands.

The situation has been compounded by a relative drop in competitiveness for Red Bull Racing, which is no longer setting the pace at the front of the field. This combination of technical frustration and performance limitations has led to discussions regarding Verstappen’s long-term future, including the possibility of an earlier-than-expected departure from the championship.

"It would be a shame if that does end up happening," Piastri said to media.

"The regulations are clearly still being worked on, but they’ve needed quite a lot of development and are certainly more complex. It would be a shame for the sport to lose Max, especially at this point in his career."

Piastri emphasised the importance of Verstappen’s presence as a competitive benchmark within the field. Over recent seasons, the Dutch driver has consistently set the standard for performance, pushing rivals to elevate their own level in order to remain competitive.

"It would be a big loss for the sport as a whole. As drivers, we want to race against the best and prove ourselves against the best."

"Max has shown his calibre over the last 10 years, particularly in the past five or six seasons where he has been the benchmark. For everyone, it would be a significant loss and not a good look for Formula 1."

With the 2026 regulations still undergoing refinement, driver feedback remains a critical factor for FIA and key stakeholders. Verstappen’s future now represents an important variable that could influence both the competitive landscape and the long-term direction of Formula 1 as the season progresses.
