Oscar Piastri was left deeply frustrated after qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing a disappointing seventh, 0.470 seconds behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who stormed to pole position at the new Madrid circuit with a 1m31.824s. Piastri's inability to extract the maximum from his car was the talk of the McLaren garage.
Throughout the weekend, Piastri had shown promising pace, especially in FP3. But when it mattered most in Q3, he couldn't string together a perfect lap. His first effort was respectable, but his final attempt unravelled almost immediately. "I think the first lap wasn't too bad, but the second lap was pretty shocking to be honest," Piastri told Sky Sports F1. "Turn 1 didn't start very well, and a few places were quite a lot better than the lap before. Once you get out of the rhythm here, it makes life very tough. So yeah, not a great session."
Piastri admitted the underlying speed was there, but consistency was the main issue at a circuit where mistakes are heavily punished. "I feel like this weekend the pace has been reasonable. It's just been about trying to be there consistently, and unfortunately one of those sessions where you just wish you could have it again," he added. The result is a bitter pill to swallow given his optimism of challenging at the front.
On the other side of the garage, Norris was heroic. The reigning world champion had lost valuable track time on Friday due to a gearbox issue, but bounced back spectacularly in Q3. He improved by almost a second from Q2, pipping Kimi Antonelli by a mere 0.011s. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella called the lap a masterpiece. "I think that's a piece of masterpiece. If you say like this, a masterpiece," Stella said. "Lando did it only in the final run of Q3. And if you want the news, is that in the final corner, he made a mistake of three tenths. So he was on a just incredible lap."
The contrast between the two McLarens highlighted just how tight the field has become. Stella added, "At the same time, the group keeps being so tight that if you are a few tenths behind like Oscar, then you are P7." Norris himself was surprised by the size of his improvement. "It was just a very good lap, especially because I improved like seven and a half tenths on my final lap. That lap was a lap that I'd not experienced before or not felt before," he said.
For Piastri, this result is a major blow in the title fight. He will start seventh while Norris lines up on pole. With the Madrid circuit being tight and difficult to overtake, Piastri will need to be aggressive from the start. Strategy and tyre management will be key to carving his way forward. If he fails to score big, the points gap to his rivals could widen.
The Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid will be a mental test for Piastri. He must bounce back and prove that his speed can be converted into results. The race will be fiercely competitive, and every mistake will be costly. Can Piastri recover? We'll find out on race day.
