Romain Grosjean has been criticised by animal rights organisation PETA following his reaction to a bird strike during Indianapolis 500 testing. The incident occurred on the opening day of the open test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, when his car made contact with a bird at high speed in Turn 3.

The Dale Coyne Racing driver continued running after the impact, although visible debris from the collision affected the cockpit area. Remnants were reported on the roll hoop, aero screen, and driver equipment, which in racing conditions can influence visibility and overall driver comfort.

In his post-session comments, Grosjean described the physical aftermath of the incident on his race suit, helmet, and seating area. However, the tone of his remarks drew criticism, with some observers highlighting a lack of sensitivity given the nature of the incident involving wildlife.

Mimi Bekhechi, a senior representative of PETA for the UK and Europe, issued a direct response, emphasising the importance of empathy in situations involving animals. The organisation argued that the focus of Grosjean’s comments appeared to prioritise equipment impact rather than the incident itself.

From a motorsport perspective, wildlife-related incidents are an inherent risk at open circuits such as Indianapolis. External environmental variables can create unpredictable situations, particularly at high speeds, where even minor संपर्कs can have safety implications for both driver and car.

This is not the first time Grosjean has encountered such a situation. During practice for the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix, he struck an animal on track, resulting in damage to the front wing of his Formula 1 car. The recurrence highlights the ongoing challenge of managing environmental factors within racing environments.

The episode underlines the broader intersection between motorsport operations and external conditions, while also demonstrating how driver reactions can influence public perception beyond on-track performance.
