Sergio Perez says he is relishing the 'unique' privilege of building Cadillac's Formula 1 project from scratch. After years of midfield struggles, the Mexican driver got his big break when he joined Red Bull at the start of 2021.
His valiant performances, especially at Istanbul, helped Max Verstappen secure his maiden F1 title and earned Perez the nickname 'The Minister of Defence'. But things went downhill from his sophomore year, culminating in his exit in 2024 after finishing 285 points behind Verstappen.
After a year on the sidelines, Cadillac signed him to lead their debut F1 season. "I really feel like this is a project," he said on the Beyond the Grid podcast. "Building something from scratch, starting from last to see how far we can go together."
Twelve rounds into 2026, the General Motors-backed team has yet to score points. But that doesn't diminish the unique privilege Perez has experienced. At Red Bull, he struggled to fix the car's ground-effect deficiencies, but with the Silverstone-based team, he feels more control over the car's philosophy.
"For the first time in my career, I feel I'm much more than a driver," he explained. "They listen to me a lot on development. Only a few drivers get that in their careers."
Despite the positive outlook, Perez has a tough second half ahead, with Cadillac now behind Aston Martin. Yet, with his experience and new role, he's ready to take the team forward.
