There is a connection that is felt, rarely described. It comes naturally; it cannot be forced. In the high-stakes world of the WRC, such a bond might be the difference between merely finishing and truly competing at the sharp end.
The pairing of Sami Pajari and his co-driver, Marko Salminen, has shown that a deep understanding off the stages can elevate performance inside the car. Salminen describes their relationship as almost telepathic.
"I know how he thinks," Salminen told DirtFish in an exclusive interview. "The way we think, it’s the same way for everything. Sami and I are such good friends, even though we are not the same age, so it’s so easy to speak and we both have such similar passion for rallying all our life."
That connection is not just talk. When the car stops in service, they rarely need to exchange many words. They instinctively know what to change on the setup. "If I tell him what the engineers say we need to change, we don’t speak so much. We just know what we do. It comes so naturally. It’s hard to explain, but the connection is crazy," added Salminen.
This efficiency brings a clear advantage: they don’t have to spend nights glued to onboard videos. "I always thought I had amazing road memory, but after Sami, he’s on top. He’s crazy good. That means we don’t need to watch videos the whole night. We can always sleep our nights," Salminen explained.
For fans who have played rally games, the best stage times often come when you are not thinking, just relying on instinct. Pajari and Salminen bring that philosophy to real life. They still enjoy the process, even having dinner together during recce. "We have fun," Salminen concluded.
With such a strong foundation, it’s no surprise Pajari is tipped as a major threat this season. Blending young talent with a rare team harmony is a recipe rivals will find hard to copy.
