Sami Pajari delivered an impressive performance in SS5 of Rally Sardinia, beating his main rivals Elfyn Evans and Oliver Solberg, despite not setting the fastest time. The Toyota driver remains fourth overall, just 2.3 seconds behind Solberg.
"That was only one stage of this loop and it was already really tough. It is certainly going to be a long afternoon," Pajari sighed. Solberg, who finished behind Pajari, admitted he was too cautious at the end of the stage. "I was probably a little too afraid towards the end of the stage. I wanted to save the tyres. I probably lost some time, but now I can push on the next two stages," said Solberg.
WRC leader Elfyn Evans remains sixth overall, more than 37 seconds off the lead. "The conditions are pretty rough. I felt the stage went well, but this is not easy. The ruts were quite big. You just have to do your best. You cannot push flat out everywhere," Evans explained.

Hyundai drivers have been in fine form in Sardinia, as expected from their favourable road positions. Adrien Fourmaux continues to lead the rally. He set the fastest time on the afternoon’s opening stage and extended his advantage over team-mate Thierry Neuville to 8.2 seconds. "The stage went quite well. We are playing the long game," Fourmaux said, referring to his tyre strategy.
With two stages remaining on Friday, Rally Sardinia is still full of tension. Fourmaux and Neuville occupy the top two positions, followed by Solberg, Pajari, and Ogier. Meanwhile, Evans, the WRC points leader, must fight hard to improve his position.
Rally Sardinia concludes on Sunday. There are still 17 stages to go, and anything can happen. But one thing is certain: Hyundai seems to be in top form on the Sardinian gravel.
