The Formula 1 race weekend at the Circuit of the Americas brought severe challenges for Oscar Piastri, after the young Australian driver could only manage seventh place during a difficult qualifying session. His performance initially placed him behind teammate Lando Norris, but a subsequent lap-time deletion for Norris due to track limits promoted Piastri up the order.

For the ambitious driver from Melbourne, however, gaining positions on the grid served as very little comfort given the underlying performance deficit of his machine. When asked about his rollercoaster weekend so far, he offered a blunt and realistic assessment of the team's ongoing struggles with overall car pace.

I do not even know if there have been any highs at all, but yes, the entire race weekend so far has simply been very tough for us, Oscar Piastri stated. We lack the necessary pace and that raises quite a few major question marks that we need to address.

He confirmed that while the car possesses the theoretical potential to be fast, it remains exceptionally difficult to drive on the limit. This handling trait has been a constant challenge since the very first lap of practice, making the final qualifying outcome far from a major surprise for the McLaren squad.

The team tried various setup configurations throughout practice, but none of the adjustments seemed to work effectively. Even before the final practice session, engineers knew minor changes would not work miracles, yet extracting a clean lap turned out to be even more demanding than anticipated.

Beyond pure performance, critical attention was drawn to the severe bumps and undulations across the track layout. Although parts of the circuit have improved compared to previous years, the braking zone ahead of the first turn remains intensely bumpy, likened to a motocross jump by the nine-time Grand Prix winner.

During Sunday's race, heavy braking zones coinciding directly with major track bumps will complicate overtaking maneuvers significantly, especially when fighting wheel-to-wheel. The drivers have already discussed these safety concerns with the FIA, and solutions are anticipated for future Grand Prix events.
