Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri of McLaren Racing has delivered a firm assessment of the potential impact should Max Verstappen choose to leave Formula 1, describing it as a significant blow to both the sport’s image and competitive standard.

The issue has gained prominence following Verstappen’s repeated criticism of the current regulation cycle, particularly the power unit philosophy that now features a 50:50 split between internal combustion and electrical energy. Since first driving the latest Red Bull Racing machinery, the four-time world champion has consistently expressed concerns over the increasing technical complexity and its effect on driving characteristics.

Verstappen’s reservations were already evident during the early stages of the regulation discussions several years ago. However, his on-track experience with the current package has reinforced those concerns, leading to suggestions that he could consider stepping away from Formula 1 earlier than expected, potentially as soon as the end of this season.

“It would be a shame if that does end up happening,” Piastri said while speaking to media at the McLaren Technology Centre.

“Clearly, the Red Bull doesn’t look like the most competitive car at the moment, but the regulations are obviously being worked on, and they’ve needed quite a lot of work. They’re certainly more complex.”

Piastri emphasised that Verstappen’s presence extends beyond performance metrics, positioning him as a benchmark for the entire grid. Over the past decade—particularly the last five to six years—Verstappen has established himself as a reference point for consistency, racecraft, and outright speed.

“It would be a shame for the sport to lose Max, especially at this point in his career as well. It would be a big loss for the sport as a whole.”

“For us as drivers, we want to race against the best, to try and prove ourselves against the best. Max has shown his calibre in the last 10 years, especially the last five or six. He’s been the benchmark.”

Beyond the competitive implications, Piastri also highlighted the potential reputational impact on Formula 1 should a leading figure exit due to dissatisfaction with regulations. Such a scenario could raise broader questions about the balance between technical evolution and the sporting spectacle.

“So for everyone, it would be a pretty big shame,” he added.

“Obviously not a great look.”

These remarks reflect a wider concern within the paddock regarding the trajectory of Formula 1’s regulatory framework. As the sport continues to evolve technologically, maintaining alignment between engineering complexity and driver engagement remains a critical challenge.

The response from FIA, alongside teams and manufacturers, will play a decisive role in shaping the long-term stability of the championship. With the season progressing and regulatory scrutiny intensifying, the situation surrounding Verstappen’s future is set to remain a central storyline in the months ahead.
