Oscar Piastri has highlighted a clear performance step from McLaren at the 2026 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, despite a challenging weekend in terms of execution.
Starting from seventh after a messy qualifying session, Piastri delivered a strong recovery drive through effective race management. He capitalised on tyre degradation and late-race opportunities to overtake Charles Leclerc, securing his second podium finish of the season.
The major upgrade package introduced by McLaren in Miami played a decisive role in this improvement. The revised aerodynamic concept enhanced high-speed stability and downforce efficiency, allowing the car to maintain consistent performance in varying track and temperature conditions.
From a technical perspective, the gains were evident in tyre management over longer stints. This was reinforced by Lando Norris finishing second, delivering McLaren’s first double podium of the season and confirming the team’s upward trajectory.
“It hasn’t been the most straightforward weekend, especially with a messy qualifying, but the race pace was definitely more encouraging,” said Piastri.
“We are clearly a step closer in performance. If we get track position, we can hold onto it. It’s a positive step for the races ahead.”
Piastri also underlined the importance of track position at Miami, where overtaking opportunities remain limited without a significant performance delta. This placed additional emphasis on strategy execution and tyre management throughout the race.
With consistent progress since Japan and further confirmation in Miami, McLaren is positioning itself as a regular podium contender. The upcoming round in Canada will serve as a key benchmark to assess whether this upgrade can sustain pressure on the leading teams in the championship battle.
