Ivan Ortola shattered the MotorLand Aragon lap record in Moto2 Practice on Friday, clocking a 1'42.791s to lead the way and secure a direct Q2 spot ahead of the Aragon Grand Prix.
The previous benchmark had already been lowered by Daniel Holgado from Aspar, who ended up second just 0.058s behind. Both riders dipped under the old time, setting the stage for a fierce battle in the intermediate class after the summer break.
Senna Agius had briefly held the top spot before the Spanish duo struck. The Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP rider eventually settled for third, despite improving his time further. Alonso Lopez was the early leader before dropping to fourth for Italjet Gresini.
Celestino Vietti nearly missed out on Q2. The SpeedRS rider was down in 18th at the chequered flag, but a stunning final sector propelled him to fifth, making him the top Boscoscuro. Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez took sixth on the second Dynavolt bike, just over half a second off the new record.
David Munoz made a strong comeback from 22nd to seventh, while Alex Escrig was even more dramatic, jumping from 21st to eighth for Forward at the very end. Collin Veijer and Izan Guevara rounded out the top ten.
Among the surprises, Taiyo Furusato soared from last in FP1 to 14th, grabbing the final Q2 slot. Meanwhile, Silverstone winner Filip Salac was demoted to Q1, as were David Alonso and Deniz Oncu, who continued to struggle with the Marc VDS squad.
Q1 will be decisive for those still uncertain, with big names like Alonso and Salac aiming to avoid a qualifying nightmare. Wildcard Marcos Ramirez also returned to Moto2 with Klint Forward Racing, ending 27th.
