Oliver Bearman has strongly criticized the stewards' decision to hand him a 10-second time penalty during the 2026 United States Grand Prix. The British driver labeled the punishment as extremely excessive and unreasonable, especially when comparing it to similar racing incidents that went unpunished or received lighter sanctions earlier in the season. The controversy erupted immediately following a virtual safety car restart as he fought to gain positions in the tightly contested midfield pack.
During a battle with Alpine driver Pierre Gasly approaching the braking zone of Turn 12 and the right-hander at Turn 13, contact occurred between the two cars. The front-left tyre of the Haas machine clipped the right side of the French driver's car as the move was executed. Stewards immediately placed the incident under investigation, ultimately determining that the driver was at fault for causing a collision and issuing a heavy 10-second penalty.
Expressing his frustration to the media, the young racer stated that he was quite shocked by the severity of the punishment and maintained that it should have been categorized purely as a racing incident. He felt hard done by because other similar battles this year had resulted in lesser penalties or no action at all. He argued that he had sufficient overlap alongside his opponent, was forced onto the kerb to avoid contact, and simply could not vanish once committed to the overtaking maneuver without locking up or losing control.
The secondary consequence of the minor clash proved even more detrimental to his race, causing catastrophic structural damage to his Haas challenger. Although the initial touch felt minor, it loosened the floorboard which progressively vibrated off over the next few laps, rendering the car highly unpredictable and forcing a premature retirement. Prior to pulling into the pits, he made the selfless decision to wave teammate Esteban Ocon past without waiting for team orders, recognizing that holding up his garage neighbor would hurt their joint constructors' championship aspirations against their direct rivals.
