Sebastien Ogier's dream of a historic tenth WRC title has been shattered. The FIA's cancellation of Rally Saudi Arabia on Thursday confirmed that the season will conclude with Rally Sardinia on 1–4 October, ending Ogier's mathematical chances.

With only one round remaining, Ogier sits fourth in the standings with 171 points, 59 behind leader Elfyn Evans (230). A maximum of 35 points is available in Sardinia, making it impossible for the nine-time champion to close the gap. This marks a bitter end to his pursuit of a tenth crown.

Ogier's hopes had been fading in recent rounds, but the cancellation of the Saudi Arabian rally delivered the final blow. He will not equal his own record of nine world titles this year. Instead, focus shifts to the three drivers still in contention: Evans, Sami Pajari, and Oliver Solberg.

Evans, a five-time WRC runner-up, is on the verge of finally securing his maiden title. He leads Toyota teammate Sami Pajari by 17 points, with Oliver Solberg a further four points back. For Pajari and Solberg, this is their first taste of a championship fight at the highest level.

This season will crown a new world champion, succeeding Thierry Neuville, who won in 2024. The WRC has recently embraced new champions, and that trend continues. Evans, who has waited patiently, has a golden opportunity to end his drought.

Rally Sardinia will be the stage for the season's final act. With its abrasive gravel roads and unpredictable weather, the event often delivers brutal drama. Evans needs consistency, while Pajari and Solberg must attack to snatch the crown. Expect tension until the final corner.

For Ogier, this is the end of his title bid this season. But as a veteran with nine titles, he will remain competitive in Sardinia, possibly playing a key role in the title fight among his rivals. One thing is certain: WRC 2026 will crown a new champion, and history awaits.
