Esteban Ocon came agonisingly close to returning Haas to the points at the Spanish GP on the new Madring circuit in Madrid. Starting from 13th, the Frenchman immediately passed both Audis at the start, then moved up to 10th after Lewis Hamilton retired. However, a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) triggered by Lance Stroll's technical failure changed everything. Ocon had to settle for 11th, just outside the top ten.
“We are disappointed because we deserve much more; today we deserved to score points,” Ocon said frustratedly. “The plan was to overtake both Audis at the start – which we did – we knew it would be difficult to keep them behind, but we managed until the pit stop. During the stop we lost the position, so we have to analyse what I could have done better: whether I could have stopped in a more advantageous position or something. I thought our pit stop was good, but evidently theirs was better.”
Despite missing out on points, Ocon saw positives in the team's performance. “We gave our maximum on track and I'm proud of everyone: we went from being eliminated in Q1 to fighting for points; it's a positive and encouraging sign for the next races,” he added. Haas has indeed been working hard to improve after a difficult start to the season. Now they must face the reality that Audi is closing in on them in the constructors' standings.
On the other side of the garage, Oliver Bearman suffered a worse fate. The British driver started from the pit lane due to Power Unit component changes, and the VSC came at the wrong time. “Unfortunately the VSC came at the wrong moment and I didn't gain any advantage,” he said after finishing 16th. “It was a difficult weekend, but the fault is entirely mine. There is a positive aspect: this weekend taught me a lot, perhaps more than a smooth weekend would have; I learned a lot from yesterday and I won't repeat that mistake.”
Bearman also felt his car was competitive. “When I had free track, my pace was on par with our rivals; it's a shame I rarely had free track due to traffic. This gives me good prospects for Baku: now we can turn the page, reset everything and come back stronger,” he concluded. The failure in Madrid was a heavy blow for Haas, especially as Audi managed to close the gap in the constructors' standings with Hulkenberg finishing ahead of Ocon.
With this result, Haas must bounce back quickly if they want to remain competitive. The next race in Baku is a golden opportunity to prove that the performance in Madrid was not just a fluke. Ocon and Bearman have extra motivation to make amends.
