Esteban Ocon has firmly asserted his position as one of the best drivers in Formula 1 after securing a double-points finish for Haas at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This bold statement comes amid intensifying speculation about his future.
The Frenchman acknowledged his status as a "free agent" upon arriving in Baku, following rumors that his seat at the American team is set to be taken by Formula 2 title-leader Rafael Camara. However, his impressive performance at the Baku City Circuit served as a response to those doubts.
Ocon and teammate Ollie Bearman capitalized on the chaos caused by two Safety Car periods to finish eighth and ninth. Ocon had been running seventh but was overtaken by Arvid Lindblad right at the finish line.
Despite losing a position, Ocon remained satisfied with the result. "I can say I deserved that, not all the rest of the shit," he told the media after the race. This statement underscores his unwavering self-belief.
When asked if this result vindicated his self-confidence, the 2021 Hungarian GP winner strongly affirmed it. "I've raced with everyone out there, and I've always been on par," he said. "I've won every championship that I've raced with. I've won races in Formula Renault, I've won championships in go-karts, I've won Formula 3, I've won GP3. I was racing in the top 10 in DTM for half a season, I won in Formula 1.
I can do it. I'm one of the best out there, and I'm not afraid to say it."
With most teams now confirming their line-ups for 2027, Ocon's options appear to be dwindling. However, his Baku performance has served as a reminder to teams in F1 and beyond that his talent remains formidable. Haas itself has shown signs of revival with competitive pace in free practice, though hindered by a yellow flag in Q2.
