Lando Norris has opened up about the unique characteristics of McLaren's Formula 1 cars that have long been a hallmark of the Woking-based team. The British driver admitted that the MCL40 he is racing this season is significantly different from previous generations, especially after the 2026 technical regulations came into effect.
McLaren has long been known for its unconventional car philosophy. Many modern-era drivers have described their cars as having weak front ends and unintuitive braking and corner entry, forcing drivers to brake heavily in a straight line before releasing the pedal delicately. Daniel Ricciardo became the most high-profile victim of this trait during his ill-fated two-year stint with the team.
With the introduction of the 2026 regulations, the car philosophy has shifted again, presenting a new challenge. Norris acknowledged that he cannot yet be certain whether the MCL40's characteristics are purely down to the regulations or McLaren's unique design. "I certainly think this year's car is different to last year by quite a long way, and again, you have to adapt to that," he told media including Motorsport Week.
"I don't know if this car is that different to other cars. I still believe it is, because it has been since I've been part of McLaren. Everyone who's driven a McLaren has said how odd and unique a McLaren is to drive, and there's been a good number of drivers who have said that and tested other cars at the same time," he added.
Norris emphasised that adaptation goes beyond mechanical balance. Tyre management has become a crucial factor in this new era. "I am 90% sure that it is more than just the mechanical balance, and the way that this car is made compared to the last few years is quite different," he explained. "The tyres are obviously very different at the same time, smaller and have less temperature, and all of these different things. Therefore, you have to adapt to them more this year, compared to last year."
Norris's admission highlights the journey of discovery drivers are on with these new rules. Time is likely to be the only antidote to the challenges of understanding their new unique characteristics. Meanwhile, the competition continues, and every team must adapt quickly to fight at the front.
