Lando Norris has warned that the introduction of the sprint format at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2027 will punish drivers who need track time to find their limit. The unique nature of the principality's circuit, with its unforgiving walls, offers no margin for error once FP1 doubles as sprint qualifying.
Monaco will host a sprint for the first time in 2027, one of five new additions to the format alongside Bahrain, Australia, Japan, and Abu Dhabi. This expands the sprint calendar to ten of the season’s rounds, alongside returning venues in Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar.
Asked for his reaction, Norris’s response was measured: “Interesting,” he said, repeating the word several times before elaborating. “I guess the main thing is that means you’ve got FP1, [Sprint] qualifying on Friday — which is the challenge.” The compressed schedule means teams and drivers arrive at one of the most unforgiving circuits on the calendar with a single practice session before qualifying counts.
“Obviously not a lot happens in a race on Sunday or in the Sprint, but the challenge is just one practice session straight in, which has probably never happened before in Monaco,” Norris said. With so little on-track time to calibrate, Norris suggested teams will lean more heavily on simulation and prior data than usual. “That’s more [about] relying on data from this year,” he explained — before turning to what it means for the drivers themselves. “Obviously tougher for us as drivers.”
That, he said, changes how the weekend will actually be driven. Monaco’s walls leave no buffer for the incremental risk-taking that normally separates the field over a full weekend. “You don’t have as much time to build up to things so you’re probably going to have to try and risk a little bit more earlier — which is normally when you can see a bit more of a difference between people who can get comfy, try things and be at 99 per cent and not go to 103 and 104 per cent — because in Monaco when you go to that limit, game over.”
For all his reservations about the driving challenge, Norris conceded the change should sharpen the spectacle. “It’s more exciting for the fans and the people watching.” Whether that trade-off — heightened jeopardy for drivers against a shorter, higher-stakes show for viewers — proves the right one for Monaco specifically will be one of the more closely watched storylines of the 2027 calendar shift.
