Lando Norris believes McLaren's performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix last month was the strongest the team has shown all season, even surpassing anything he experienced during his title-winning 2024 campaign.
The British driver, who clinched his maiden world championship last year with seven victories, admitted that the start of 2025 was far from smooth. The Woking-based squad had to wait until round 11 in Hungary to return to the top step of the podium. But a major upgrade package for the MCL40 changed everything at the Hungaroring.
"It was clear what the weaknesses are of the car, what was better with the car, but the performance we had on Sunday, especially, was probably a better performance than we had at any point last year," Norris told media including RacingNews365, as quoted in the provided material.
Despite the praise, Norris remained cautious, noting that the car is still not as consistent as its predecessor. "It still shows that we can kind of ebb and flow and still be a little bit more inconsistent than we were at times last season," he added.
The big question now is whether that form will carry over to this weekend's event at Zandvoort, where Norris won 12 months ago. He insisted that the team is still trying to understand the car perfectly, but he is hopeful of another strong result on a circuit he enjoys.
"We're still trying to understand everything perfectly with the car, but it's a track that I've enjoyed," Norris said. "I've always liked it, and we performed well here as a team in the past. So I'm hoping this weekend is the same again."
He also pointed out that Zandvoort is not too dissimilar to Budapest in some ways, but differs in wind conditions and significantly lower temperatures. "Obviously, much colder, so we have to just wait and see," he concluded. McLaren will undoubtedly hope that Hungary was not a one-off, but rather the beginning of a consistent run that could keep them in the fight at the front.
