Lando Norris believes it would feel “silly” not to be confident about McLaren’s future prospects following the team’s major performance improvement at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix.

McLaren endured a difficult start to the season due to reliability issues and three non-finishes across the opening two rounds. However, the latest upgrade package introduced in Miami immediately delivered stronger competitiveness, including Norris’ Sprint Race victory and second-place finish in the grand prix.

The result was reinforced by Oscar Piastri securing third place, demonstrating that McLaren’s progress extended across both sides of the garage. Technically, the team’s aerodynamic and balance improvements appeared to enhance tyre efficiency and stability through medium- and high-speed corners.

“Certainly. It would feel silly not to be confident about the future after such a big improvement this weekend.”

“We know this is a track that suits us, but the step forward was still significant.”

Despite the renewed optimism, Norris remained cautious about McLaren’s overall competitive position. He pointed out that Miami has historically suited McLaren’s car characteristics more than some of its main rivals, particularly Mercedes.

The British driver also highlighted that the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix will present a very different challenge, especially given Mercedes’ strong historical performance in Montreal, where heavy braking zones and traction areas are critical.

“Formula 1 is too easy to judge from just one race.”

“You need to see performance across different circuits, weather conditions, and track characteristics.”

Norris added that McLaren must continue pushing aggressively with development despite the progress shown in Miami. Under modern Formula 1 regulations, even small aerodynamic or mechanical setup gains can significantly alter the competitive order from one weekend to another.

With renewed momentum following its double podium in Miami, McLaren has re-entered the fight at the front of the field. However, maintaining competitiveness across a wider range of circuit layouts will determine whether the improvement is enough to sustain pressure on its rivals throughout the 2026 season.
