Lando Norris has called for a one-race ban for Franco Colapinto after the collision that eliminated him from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The reigning world champion's frustration boiled over as he stated that the Alpine driver is not worthy of a place in Formula 1.
The incident occurred during the restart following a safety car period caused by Alex Albon's crash. Colapinto locked up at Turn 1 and slammed into his Alpine teammate, Pierre Gasly. Norris, on the outside line, had nowhere to go and the contact ended his race on the spot.
Speaking to F1 TV, Norris expressed his struggles throughout the race, particularly with straight-line speed. "I was just slow. Just struggling a lot in the straights; you saw how quickly everyone came past me," he said. "So, just an impossible race for me from that side and straightline speed today. So, hopefully they'll get that fixed for next time."
However, Norris's anger escalated when speaking to the written press. He demanded stricter action from the FIA. "I think the FIA should be more strict and start handing out bans for this kind of stuff," he fumed. "It's just careless from people. Costs a lot of money. All my parts are in the bin now."
Norris also highlighted the importance of safety and sportsmanship. "I've not seen it, but I mean if you cause a crash on a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban," he added. This statement underscores the severity of the incident, not only financially but also in terms of competitive fairness.
This is not the first controversy for Colapinto. Just days earlier, his teammate Gasly revealed that he and his family had received online abuse from Argentinian fans following the Spanish Grand Prix. This prompted Alpine chief Flavio Briatore to threaten a media blackout for Colapinto and the Argentinian press if the abuse did not stop.
The FIA stewards gave Colapinto a 10-second time penalty after the race, though he didn't reach the chequered flag. The penalty may be converted to a grid penalty for the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix. This adds pressure on Colapinto, who is now under intense scrutiny for both his on-track performance and off-track behaviour.
For Norris, this incident is a significant blow in his title fight. Losing newly upgraded car parts is costly, especially amid fierce competition. Meanwhile, the pressure on Colapinto and Alpine continues to mount, with the young Argentine's future in F1 now in question.
