Nico Muller has quickly demonstrated why Porsche Formula E Team selected him to replace Antonio Felix da Costa. Across his first 10 races with the Weissach-based factory squad, Muller has delivered consistent points, established an effective working relationship with Pascal Wehrlein, and secured his maiden Formula E victory in Berlin.

Porsche team principal Florian Modlinger believes Muller's previous results did not fully reflect his ability. The Swiss driver endured a difficult period with Dragon Penske Autosport during Seasons 6 and 7 before losing his seat for the second half of Season 7 and the entirety of Season 8. His route back into Formula E came through ABT Cupra at the beginning of the Gen3 era, despite the team lacking the package required to compete regularly at the front.

Performance Analysis Opened the Porsche Door

Modlinger explained that Porsche did not recruit Muller solely because of his experience or factory-driver status. The manufacturer conducted a detailed analysis of his performances with ABT Cupra, including comparisons against his team-mates and an assessment of the results he achieved with Mahindra powertrains. Despite the machinery's limitations, Muller was judged to have extracted more performance than his final classifications suggested.

"To be honest, if we had not anticipated that he was capable of performing at this level, he would not have been given the contract and the cockpit," Modlinger said. "In my opinion, based on the cars he was driving in the past, he was perhaps underestimated by a lot of people in the paddock. I knew him from DTM and knew how he works, how precise he is, and how quick he can be."

That assessment is particularly relevant in Formula E, where outright speed represents only one part of a driver's performance. Energy management, regeneration efficiency, race-mode execution, engineer communication, and the ability to react to changing strategic conditions are central to delivering competitive results. A driver operating in an uncompetitive package can therefore appear ordinary in the standings while producing far stronger underlying data.

Berlin Victory Confirms Muller's Potential

Muller spent two seasons with ABT while the team struggled with its Mahindra-powered package. He was later signed as a Porsche factory driver and placed alongside Jake Dennis at customer team Andretti. Competing against Dennis gave Porsche a direct reference for evaluating Muller's speed, consistency, and ability to adapt to its powertrain and operating systems.

Da Costa's move to Jaguar subsequently created an opening in Porsche's factory line-up. Muller was promoted to partner Wehrlein, with the team valuing both his technical understanding and his working approach. The partnership has produced regular points and a stable internal dynamic. Their collision in Monaco represented a rare setback, but Muller immediately accepted responsibility and issued an apology, limiting the impact on the relationship between the two drivers.

Muller's Berlin victory provided the clearest confirmation of Porsche's decision. It was not only his first Formula E win but also came on home soil for the German manufacturer. The result demonstrated that his performances with ABT and Andretti were not isolated peaks, but part of a sustained development curve built around stronger execution and a deeper understanding of Formula E's technical demands.

Modlinger stressed that Muller's progress has not surprised Porsche because the recruitment decision was based on measurable performance data. "When we were looking at possibilities and drivers, we carried out a clear performance analysis," he said. "When you see what he was able to do at ABT Cupra with the team-mates he had, and also when they were running the Mahindra, a careful and detailed performance analysis showed what he was capable of. That was also one of the reasons why we signed him." With a Berlin victory and consistent points already secured, Muller has given Porsche a rare benefit from a driver change: immediate performance without sacrificing internal stability.
