After nearly a decade without significant changes, Mazda has finally confirmed that the CX-3 will receive a new generation. This announcement also puts to rest speculation about the future of the compact SUV, which was thought to be discontinued after production in Japan ended earlier this year.
The confirmation came from Mazda's first-half financial report, as cited by Carscoops. In the document, the Hiroshima-based manufacturer stated that the CX-3 will retain its name, rather than being renamed to something like CX-20. This means the model still holds an important place in Mazda's global lineup.
Its design has already been hinted at through a pair of official sketches shown in Thailand last year. The appearance adopts Mazda's latest design language, with a front end reminiscent of the new CX-5 and a rear with a coupe-like roofline. The taillights also resemble those of the Vision X-Compact concept, which will serve as the basis for the next Mazda2.

More intriguingly, the new-generation CX-3 will ride on a dedicated Mazda platform, not a joint development with another manufacturer. The engine lineup is expected to be quite diverse: conventional petrol, mild-hybrid, and full-hybrid. Good news for enthusiasts: non-hybrid variants are reportedly still offering a 6-speed manual transmission, something increasingly rare in this segment.
In terms of market, the new CX-3 is aimed at high-volume sub-compact segments, particularly in Asia and Oceania. Production will be centered at the AutoAlliance Thailand plant, from where units will be exported to Japan, other ASEAN markets, and additional regions starting in 2027.
The arrival of the new CX-3 generation is clearly a breath of fresh air in the increasingly competitive SUV market. Mazda seems intent on maintaining its identity by still offering enjoyable conventional engines, while embracing electrification.
