Autodromo del Mugello isn't going anywhere. The iconic Tuscan circuit has officially signed a contract extension with MotoGP until the end of 2031, ensuring the Italian GP remains a cornerstone of the motorcycle racing calendar. The news came just hours after Portimao was also confirmed to stay until 2029, marking a busy day for racing fans.
For MotoGP, Mugello is more than just a track. With its fast and challenging layout, combined with the atmosphere created by the Italian fanbase, Mugello has long been one of the ‘spiritual homes’ for riders and teams. “Mugello is much more than just a Grand Prix venue,” said Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP Vice General Director. “It is one of the spiritual homes of MotoGP, where the passion of Italian fans and the history of our sport create an atmosphere unique in the world. Every year it reminds us why it remains one of the most special events on the calendar, and we are proud to guarantee its presence in MotoGP’s future.”
This certainty also lays the foundation for the circuit's future development. Paolo Poli, CEO and Director of the Mugello Circuit, stated that the renewal demonstrates a shared commitment with Ferrari for Mugello's future. “It lays solid foundations for the continued development of the facility, ensuring it remains a benchmark on the international stage and one of the key events on the MotoGP calendar for fans worldwide,” he said. Poli also highlighted a special milestone: in 2025, Mugello will celebrate 50 years since the first motorcycle Grand Prix was held there in 1976. “With this renewal, that history continues, opening a new chapter for Mugello, Tuscany, Italy, and MotoGP.”
Support also comes from local government. Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscany Region, emphasised that this partnership strengthens Tuscany's position as a world-class sports destination. “Consolidating our relationship with MotoGP until 2031 is a confirmation of the strength and potential of our region. The Mugello Circuit represents excellence for Tuscany and for all of Italy. This renewal further strengthens the important role that the circuit and major sporting events can play in promoting growth, international visibility, and tourism development,” Giani said. He added that Mugello, located just outside Florence, is a strategic asset that will continue to be supported to act as a catalyst for visibility, sustainable development, and new opportunities.
From a competitive standpoint, this certainty provides stability for teams and riders. Mugello is known as a circuit that tests the limits of engine performance and rider bravery, with long straights and fast corners that often produce fierce battles. Its presence on the calendar until 2031 means future generations of riders will continue to experience its unique challenges.
