Jorge Martin arrives at Motegi with a narrow 12-point lead over Marc Marquez, and the 2026 MotoGP title fight is about to enter its most intense phase. With five rounds remaining, the Japanese Grand Prix at the stop-and-go Motegi circuit could tilt the championship either way.
Jorge Martin and the Unfamiliar Challenge
Martin leads the standings with 306 points, but he has never completed a full Grand Prix weekend at Motegi aboard the Aprilia RS-GP. Last year, he missed the event due to injury after a Turn 1 braking incident with teammate Marco Bezzecchi, which sidelined him until the final round of 2025.
Yet history favors the Spaniard at this track. He swept both the Sprint and the main race in 2023, and added podium finishes in 2022 (P3) and 2024 (P2). Despite limited track time on the Noale machine, Motegi has been a happy hunting ground.

Marc Marquez: Record Hunter on Home Turf
Just 12 points adrift, reigning world champion Marquez returns to a circuit where he has always excelled. With five wins across all classes, including three in the premier class (2016, 2018, 2019), he is the most successful active rider at Motegi. A fourth premier-class victory would break a tie with Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, and Loris Capirossi.
Motegi also holds emotional significance: it was where Marquez clinched his ninth world title, matching Valentino Rossi. And history shows that whenever Marquez has led the championship at any point in a season, he has gone on to win the crown. He led from San Marino to Austria, and the title remains within reach.
Bezzecchi and the Walking Wounded
Marco Bezzecchi is still in contention, 42 points behind Martin. However, the top three title rivals are all battling physical issues: Martin with right arm pump, Marquez with his previously injured right arm, and Bezzecchi with a left knee injury. The grueling flyaway races will test their resilience.
Behind them, Pedro Acosta is riding a wave of momentum. Fresh off his maiden MotoGP victory at KTM's home race in Austria, the rookie has surged to fourth in the standings, leapfrogging Fabio Di Giannantonio and sitting 72 points off the lead. Maverick Vinales also returns to action, adding another layer to the competition.
Championship Implications and Technical Battle
With five rounds left, every point is crucial. Motegi's hard braking and acceleration zones could favor Ducati's top-speed advantage, but Aprilia's Martin has shown pace. Meanwhile, KTM's Acosta is on the rise, while Honda and Yamaha continue to search for form.
A win for Marquez would not only reclaim the championship lead but also send a statement that experience and history are on his side. But Martin has reasons to believe: he has never lost at Motegi when finishing, and 12 points is far from safe. The Japanese GP promises high tension.
