Marc Marquez immediately set the pace at the Sepang International Circuit, topping the opening free practice (FP1) session of the 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix. The Spanish rider laid down an early marker in this crucial phase of the world championship battle, showing supreme speed right from the start.
This FP1 session carried massive significance as it served as a vital fitness test for Jorge Martin, who returned to the track riding with a broken wrist. Following his initial run, he underwent a rigorous medical examination by Dr. Angel Charte to determine his participation for the remainder of the Grand Prix weekend, ultimately receiving the green light to continue.
A contrasting fate befell Raul Fernandez, who also entered the weekend carrying a finger fracture. Despite attempting to test his physical condition during FP1, the intense pain in the finger he heavily relies on for braking forced him to step down and withdraw from the remainder of the event.
On the track, action heated up quickly as riders tested medium and soft compound tires. Marquez wasted no time establishing the benchmark with a blistering lap time of 1:58.912, pulling ahead of chasing rivals Marco Bezzecchi and Pedro Acosta, who both sat roughly four tenths adrift of the multi-time world champion.
Towards the conclusion of the session, drama unfolded when stand-in rider Iker Lecuona suffered a dramatic front fender failure on his Gresini Ducati, shattering into pieces on the straight. Fortunately, the incident concluded without any rider safety consequences, allowing Marquez to comfortably secure the fastest time of Friday morning.
