MotoGP boss responds to concerns over Adelaide circuit TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Jack Miller leads a pack of MotoGP riders at Assen.

The move from the picturesque Phillip Island to downtown Adelaide has been met with mixed views. It will be the first time MotoGP in the modern era has raced on a bona fide street circuit. To do so, comprehensive changes to the Adelaide course are set to take place, including a track extension that will utilise part of the former Australian Grand Prix circuit.

Two versions of the street circuit have been mooted, with one for Supercars and another for MotoGP. Speaking with Motorsport.com, Carmelo Ezpeleta labelled the Adelaide transformation the "most ambitious project" in the championship's history.

"It will really set the tone for a new era in MotoGP, although we do not see the Adelaide project as something we are going to replicate 10 times a year," Ezpeleta explained. "I think it will open people's eyes around the world by showing that this is possible."

Much has been debated about whether motorcycle racing should happen on Adelaide's streets due to safety concerns and the suitability of the circuit. Ezpeleta said he was confident that Adelaide would be safe for MotoGP once changes were made. A preview of the track layout is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

"A lot of work has gone into the circuit and its layout with an emphasis on how to design the best possible track within the existing constraints," he explained. "From a safety perspective, which is non-negotiable, it will be safe. Once that was established, we looked at how to minimise the impact, improve the racing and everything else."

Another concern, particularly from the local community, is over habitat loss. Upwards of 50 mature trees are set to be felled for the MotoGP as part of broader plans that also include the North Adelaide Golf Course for LIV Golf and the Australian Open. The South Australian Government has promised to replace every felled tree two or three times over. Ezpeleta said MotoGP would work with the South Australian Motorsport Board to mitigate the environmental impact.

"The environmental impact on the park [in Adelaide] has been a priority for us from the beginning," said Ezpeleta. "Everything we changed was offset somewhere else. For example, for every area of permanent asphalt that is installed, other areas will be turned into green spaces. There has been very meticulous work – and I think this is a credit to the FIM and the MotoGP team – to be very precise about where the track goes in order to minimise the impact."

The race will be on next year's calendar, the layout will be announced very soon, and the event will take place in the latter part of 2027.
