The Pirelli tyre test in Valencia has become a talking point ahead of the 2027 season. The switch from Michelin to Pirelli should have been a crucial opportunity for all riders to adapt. However, not everyone got that chance. Big names like Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, and Fabio Quartararo were denied permission by their teams to participate. Satellite riders such as Enea Bastianini and Fabio Di Giannantonio also missed out. This decision raises a big question: why isn't the riders' voice stronger in shaping MotoGP's direction?
In MotoGP, tyres are more than just components. Their characteristics and behaviour directly affect riding style, making early introduction key. Bastianini spoke out: "For me it would have been nice to try the Pirelli tyres, also here next Monday. I tried to negotiate with KTM to see if it was possible to test the bike, but they said no. It would have been better for everyone to try the Pirellis before Valencia. It would have been better if it had been mandatory for everyone, but that is not the plan, it wasn't scheduled for us."
The absence of a united riders' association in MotoGP is the root cause. Unlike Formula 1, which has the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), MotoGP lacks a dedicated organisation to defend riders' interests. The idea has been discussed but never materialised. As a result, when crucial decisions like tyre testing access are made, riders can only object individually. In situations like this, there is strength in numbers.
If riders cannot find common ground on an issue that benefits the entire grid, how can they unite on other matters? This should serve as a warning for MotoGP. Without a strong voice, riders are vulnerable to manufacturers' political interests. After all, they are the main actors risking their lives and careers on track.
The 2027 technical regulations will bring major changes. Engines will drop from 1000cc to 850cc, and aerodynamic performance will be reduced to limit top speeds. But the tyre change may have the most direct impact on riders. They need time to understand the limits of the new tyres, especially since Pirelli's characteristics differ from Michelin's. Without adequate testing, the risk of early-season mistakes increases.
Some riders complain they will only get one day of testing at Valencia, a track that is not representative and in cold conditions, before the end of the year. This is clearly not ideal preparation. Bastianini added that the situation is unfair, especially for riders changing teams. "I think it's not right if only some riders can try. Everyone should have the same opportunity," he said.
The lesson from the Pirelli test should be a momentum for riders to unite. Perhaps it's time they had a union capable of pressuring manufacturers and Dorna. Without it, riders will continue to be pawns in the political game of motorsport. MotoGP needs to learn from F1, which has proven that a collective voice can bring positive change.
