Liberty Media and Dorna have officially unveiled the updated weekend format for the premier MotoGP class starting in the 2027 season. This adjustment aims to introduce an additional qualifying phase, following four years after the successful implementation of Saturday Sprint races introduced back in 2023.
Calculations show that riders will actually spend less total time on the track compared to previous years. While sessions previously totaled 160 minutes excluding races, the new schedule reduces track time to 130 minutes for all riders, and 145 minutes for the 12 riders who progress from Q1 to Q2.
The most concerning aspect of the new rules involves the two sessions determining the Sprint grid and the Q1 shootout. All 22 riders will be forced to push to the absolute limit in a narrow 15-minute window to secure strong grid positions, replacing the previous 60-minute Practice format where the top 10 advanced directly.

This extreme format is expected to generate constant yellow flags and severe traffic issues. Race Direction will likely struggle to monitor all impeding incidents, even those occurring unintentionally following minor rider mistakes, potentially ruining crucial flying laps for major contenders through no fault of their own.
Critics point out that this layout appears designed to manufacture on-track drama and mixed-up starting grids at all costs. As a result, riders will once again be left to shoulder the consequences of a system prioritizing entertainment over sporting purity.
