Filip Salac made a stunning return to form in Moto2, clinching pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix 2026 at the Red Bull Ring. It was his first pole since the 2023 Portuguese GP, ending a three-year drought. The Czech rider left no doubt about his speed.
From the start of Q2, Salac was on a mission. He had his fastest lap deleted for exceeding track limits, but he responded immediately, setting a time of 1:32.381. That lap proved unbeatable, securing him the top spot for tomorrow's race.
Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez will start second, just 0.121 seconds adrift. Gonzalez struggled early in the session but recovered to put himself in a strong position. Alex Escrig completed the front row, 0.146 seconds behind Salac.
Q1 was fiercely contested, with Luca Lunetta briefly leading before ending up fourth behind Deniz Oncu, Van der Goorbergh, and Baltus. Fernandez missed out on Q2 after crashing at Turn 9 on his final lap.
In Q2, drama unfolded when Senna Agius, recently announced as a Tech3 MotoGP rider for next season, crashed at Turn 2 and ended his session early. Meanwhile, Salac kept his pace. He faced pressure from Ortola and Guevara, but they eventually dropped to fourth and fifth. Gonzalez moved up to second, with Escrig completing the top three.
It was a tough session for the Italian riders, none of whom made the top 10. Tony Arbolino was the best-placed in 11th. Salac now has a great chance to claim his second win of the season after his success in Britain, but he will need to keep Gonzalez at bay.
The Moto2 race in Austria promises to be a thrilling battle. Salac's pole position gives him the ideal starting point, but Gonzalez's consistency this season means he won't give up without a fight. All eyes will be on Spielberg as the two title contenders go head-to-head.
