Severe tire degradation during the 12-lap sprint at Motegi has forced Michelin to implement drastic measures for safety reasons. The alarming appearance of blistering and chunking—where tread chunks tear away—on several machines prompted the official supplier to completely ban the soft rear compound for the main race.
Pietro Taramasso explained that high track temperatures, intense racing paces, and the aggressive grip of the newly laid asphalt triggered the severe wear. Prior to the decision, riders like Marc Marquez and Fabio Quartararo had been evaluating the soft compound for their grand prix strategy since they had escaped the troublesome tire issues during earlier running.
Together with Dorna, the French tire manufacturer swiftly eliminated the soft option from the allocation. While the medium compound remains a viable choice, Taramasso warned that it would demand careful tire management from the riders during specific phases of the grand prix to ensure complete race distance durability.

This unexpected shift throws a massive curveball into Ducati's garage preparations. With Michelin strongly advising the hard compound—a specification virtually untested throughout the weekend—teams and riders are left with just a fleeting 10-minute warm-up session to understand its behavior.
