Franco Morbidelli was left frustrated after receiving a long lap penalty for the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The VR46 Ducati rider was judged to have impeded Enea Bastianini during a fast lap in practice. The stewards' document cited "multiple offences" of this nature this season.
"I'm dumber than the other riders, less savvy in these situations," he told Italian media at Misano on Saturday. "But this should be a foolproof rule if it's meant for safety. If it's just for fun, then the dumber you are, the more you pay."
Morbidelli then compared the situation to Formula 1, advocating for a warning system. "When I watch F1, drivers are always well-informed about who's coming up behind and how far away they are, thanks to the radio," he said. "It makes me smile because they have mirrors and four wheels, while we're on two wheels without mirrors. We have to turn around quickly, ready to get out of the way."
He believes a combination of dashboard messages, radio, and blue flags would solve the issue. "In my opinion, that would solve this annoying problem," he stated. "It's frustrating to put in a strong performance and then lose positions or serve a penalty for a violation that doesn't actually ruin your performance."
MotoGP is set to introduce a radio system in the future, but it's unclear if it will include traffic warnings. Morbidelli, who finished 12th in the sprint, faces a tough race from a disadvantaged position. "Tomorrow's race is over: with a long lap and my usual Grand Prix performance, I don't know if I'll be able to get in the points," he concluded.
