Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya offered a different perspective on the incident involving Franco Colapinto at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The incident, which occurred during the Safety Car restart in Baku, sparked huge controversy, but Montoya actually appreciated the aggressive approach shown by the young Alpine driver.
In the race, Colapinto, driving for Alpine, attempted to overtake his teammate Pierre Gasly but lost control of his car at Turn 1 and collided with Gasly. The incident also involved defending world champion Lando Norris, who was furious and demanded disqualification. Although Norris later apologized, the controversy continued, especially after Alpine boss Flavio Briatore considered internal sanctions for Colapinto.
Colapinto was eventually given a five-place grid penalty to be served at the next race in Sepang. However, that decision did not dampen support from some quarters, including Montoya. In an interview with F1TV, Montoya explained that Colapinto's mistake was natural in tight racing conditions.
“I think he expected everyone to brake really late. The problem is, when you're that far back, you get a sort of traffic jam. Everyone keeps braking and slowing down; then you see him brake and almost hit someone. So he moves to the inside, but almost stops the car. He made a mistake, hit his teammate and took out Lando. He was wrong, but he was just a little bit off,” Montoya said. “The difficulty is that when you're aggressive, you see an opportunity and I admire those who try. At the restart, they see an opportunity. Some think 'I don't want to lose positions', while Franco is the type of driver who wants to go and take it. When you're one of those drivers who, like Max Verstappen, always see an opportunity to seize, it's inevitable to make mistakes.”
Montoya's statement highlights the dilemma often faced by young drivers in F1: between caution and aggression. Colapinto, known for his attacking driving style, is under pressure to prove himself in the competitive Alpine seat. The Baku incident was a valuable lesson, but also showed his potential if he can control his aggression.
Meanwhile, the grid penalty for Sepang is a blow for Colapinto, but also an opportunity to bounce back. He must use the Malaysian race to show that his ability is unquestionable, and prove that his aggression can be channeled into positive results. The Alpine team, struggling in the midfield, certainly hopes Colapinto can learn from his mistake and perform more maturely.
With support from figures like Montoya, Colapinto has the mental capital to face the pressure. The public is eager to see whether the Argentine driver will be more controlled or maintain his characteristic driving style.
