Pierre Gasly's Monaco 2026 podium was stripped away after the FIA International Court of Appeal (ICA) upheld an appeal by McLaren and Red Bull. The decision not only altered the race result but also raised serious questions about the consistency and fairness of the sport's judicial system.
It all began when five drivers, including Gasly and Oscar Piastri, were handed time penalties for allegedly breaching the 60 km/h pit lane speed limit. Piastri and others served their penalties, but Gasly did not and finished third on the road. After a 10-second penalty was added, he was demoted from the podium. However, the FIA and FOM later realized that the timing loop system had erroneously issued speeding alerts because drivers took a 'shorter' route to the pit lane. Gasly successfully challenged the decision through the Right to Review and was reinstated to the podium, denying Isack Hadjar his maiden Red Bull podium.
McLaren and Red Bull were aggrieved and took the case to the ICA. After a closed-door hearing in Paris on August 25, a four-judge bench ruled that the stewards had overstepped their jurisdiction and that Gasly was indeed guilty of breaching the speed limit. The ICA deemed the stewards' decision to reinstate Gasly against the principles of sporting fairness, especially as he was the only one able to benefit from the Right to Review with evidence that was only a 'best estimate'.
The ruling immediately sparked speculation about bias within the ICA. Some questioned the integrity of the appeal process, particularly since the hearing was held behind closed doors and involved representatives from the FIA, FOM, and all 11 teams. Was this purely rule enforcement, or was there pressure from big teams? Either way, the outcome favored McLaren and Red Bull, while Alpine and Gasly had to accept a bitter reality.
For Gasly, this was a crushing blow. He had shown solid pace throughout the weekend in Monte Carlo, only to lose a podium due to a technical interpretation. Meanwhile, Hadjar finally secured his first F1 podium, albeit in unusual circumstances. Red Bull also benefited doubly: they won the appeal and saw one of their drivers step onto the podium.
The incident also highlighted the weaknesses of the pit lane system in Monaco. The narrow, winding street circuit gives the pit lane entry a unique geometry that can trigger misreadings by the timing system. The FIA and FOM promised to evaluate the system for future seasons, but for now, the controversy has left a stain on one of the most prestigious races on the calendar.
The question now: will this ICA decision set a precedent for similar cases in the future? Or will it deepen the divide between big teams and independent teams? One thing is certain: the Monaco 2026 podium drama will be remembered as one of the most controversial chapters in F1's judicial history.
