Sky Sports Formula 1 pundit Naomi Schiff has warned that ongoing power unit issues at Mercedes could cost Kimi Antonelli race wins and seriously threaten his championship campaign. The Italian driver currently leads the drivers' standings on 320 points, holding a commanding advantage at the top of the table.
Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Show following the race weekend at the Sepang International Circuit, Schiff discussed the heartbreaking end to the grand prix for George Russell. The British driver was comfortably in contention for a podium finish before suffering a power unit failure in the closing laps, which ultimately extended his team-mate's lead in the standings to 84 points.
The recurring reliability troubles have sparked internal concerns within the Brackley and Brixworth squads. With Toto Wolff visibly frustrated on the pit wall, the wider technical issues affecting multiple Mercedes-powered cars are now posing a direct threat to their championship aspirations.

"It's not great that they're happening. It's happened multiple times, not just with George's car. Kimi's also had some issues," Schiff explained regarding the troubling pattern of reliability failures inside the garage.
"Other Mercedes power unit cars have had issues. So, there is a wider issue that I think Toto is probably concerned about. We noticed his frustration, and we can understand why he's as frustrated as that," she added, highlighting the mounting pressure on the team management.
Schiff further argued that these persistent glitches could deny Kimi Antonelli crucial victories as he fights through his maiden championship battle. With competitive rivals such as Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar lurking closely for Red Bull, any further dropped points could prove costly for the Silver Arrows.
