The Formula 1 weekend at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia turned into a major puzzle for Mercedes as a heavily anticipated car upgrade appeared to push their performance backward rather than forward. Saturday's qualifying session delivered the team's toughest challenge of the season under scorching temperatures and unique track conditions.
George Russell and his teammate found themselves mired in fourth and eighth places, conceding half a second to the polesetter. Pre-event simulations had boldly predicted a lap time gain of roughly three tenths from the new aerodynamic components.
Team boss Toto Wolff expressed open perplexity over the sudden deficit. Instead of harvesting expected gains, the car struggled heavily through slow corners and long straights, suffering from unexpected drag and handling traits unseen all year.
